Lab-Created Diamonds

Category
Growing in popularity like mad, lab-created diamonds are a phenomenal option for couples. Differing only in their source, age, and ethical implications, a lab diamond is worth serious consideration. So, what is a lab-created diamond anyway? Read on to learn more about why cultured diamonds are an amazing, ethical alternative.

What is a Lab-Created Diamond?

Also known as man-made diamond, a lab-created diamond is just what you might expect. It’s a diamond created in a lab versus in the earth. Natural diamonds formed billions of years ago. They start out as carbon in the Earth’s mantle. The heat and high pressure of the mantle is what causes the carbon atoms to bond together. It’s this bonding of the atoms that causes crystals that eventually become diamonds.
A lab diamond, on the other hand, is created in a controlled lab environment. Advanced processes can replicate the conditions under which diamonds develop, minus the billions of years. These “cultured” diamonds consist of carbon atoms arranged in a diamond crystal structure. Lab diamonds are made of the same materials as natural diamonds. They display the exact same chemical and physical traits as natural diamonds. They are nearly impossible to differentiate from natural diamonds. In fact, only specialized testing equipment can determine the difference.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes. Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. I will sing that from the rooftops until my dying day. The only difference is that they are created in a lab versus by heat and pressure in the earth’s mantle. They look like natural diamonds, sparkle like natural diamonds, and test as diamonds (because that is what they are!). They are as hard as mined diamonds. They vary in color, clarity, and cut just the same as natural diamonds, too. It’s important to mention that lab diamonds are not synthetic alternatives like cubic zirconia. They will not become cloudy or yellowed with time, and they hold both their value and beauty forever.

Are Lab-Created Diamonds Ethical?

Yes and yes. If you have concerns about the ethics of mined diamonds (but you still love diamonds, dammit), lab-created is a perfect option. There is no mining involved in the creation of a lab diamond, meaning less concerns about environmental impact. More importantly, there are no human rights concerns with these stones, either. Bonus — they are generally more affordable than natural diamonds, so you can get a bigger stone on the same budget. Win win!

Should You Choose a Lab-Created Diamond?

If you value having a real diamond in your ring, or if you just prefer that classic white scintillation (as I do!) over other diamond alternatives like moissanite, consider a lab-created stone. You get the rock of your dreams on your finger (or around your neck, or in your ears…) and save some cash. And you get it all without the ethical and moral drawbacks of purchasing a mined diamond.
